About the year 1830 the condition of the insane of New Hampshire began to awaken a deep interest in the hearts of philanthropic persons in all sections of the state. 11 years later after much legislature and many public and private contributions the hospital location was decided and construction began in 1842, the hospital admitted its first patients on 29th day of October, 1842. In 1901 the Legislature changed the corporate title of the institution from New Hampshire Asylum for the Insane to New Hampshire State Hospital, thereby recognizing the true character of the institution as well as assuaging the feelings of the patients and their relatives.
